Junior Sailing Camp
Atwood Yacht Club has a long tradition of teaching children to sail. Two separate weeks of Sailing Camp are held each July, with the goal of providing a safe and fun experience where kids can make friends and share the joys of learning to sail a small boat. Each class is limited to 30 students to provide for individualized instruction.
During their week at Sailing Camp, children will learn boating safety, how to rig a small sailboat, how to right a capsized sailboat, and how to sail and race a sailboat. Leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and responsibility skills are also focused upon and encouraged. There is also plenty of time during the week for volleyball, tubing, swimming in the pool, and fun around the campfire.
The classes are held on the Atwood Yacht Club property. Students will attend from Tuesday to Friday and will stay overnight. Tents and cots are provided, as well as all of the camper's meals. Atwood Yacht Club provides a large group of adult volunteers who love to teach and who provide supervision 24 hours a day.
Children ages 9 to 15 years of age are accepted for the program, and it is not required that a relative be a member of Atwood Yacht Club. Children should weigh at least fifty pounds so that they and a partner will have the necessary weight to right a capsized boat.
They do not need previous boating experience, but must have the ability to swim across the Club pool.
Children who attend the Junior Sailing Camp make lifelong friends who often return together for years to come. Their passion for sailing spreads to their entire family, and often becomes a permanent and deeply loved pastime.
